WMDT 47 News - It's true—men tend to lose weight a lot faster than women do.
"It's not fair. But there is a science behind it. It has a lot to do with testosterone –helps us build a little more muscle and it keeps our metabolism boosted for longer in life," personal trainer and health coach at World Gym Donta Finney said.
Dr. Gail Anderson is the president of a medical weight loss clinic in Salisbury, Md. She agrees that men do have that biological edge.
"Men weigh more, and then when you add to the fact that they often do more physical activity, as part of their life, that helps them more," she said.
But there may be a way for women to catch up. WMDT's Jemie Lee linked up with Finney who showed her some "manly" moves to burn fat faster. He says the natural way to boost testosterone is to build muscle. So ladies, pump it up and go a little heavier than you usually do.
"Just building a little more muscle by hitting more weights and going a little heavier than women usually feel like they should. They tend to stay a little lighter because they don't want to bulk up -- but the way you bulk up is by eating a lot," Finney said.
Extreme workouts like CrossFit, Insanity and P90X can dramatically boost the body's calorie torching abilities, because they incorporate high intensity interval training.
"A lot of women like to do really fast cardio, which is great for some time, but eventually you get used to it," Finney said.
So get in that cardio, but change it up and don't be afraid to work out like a man.
Dr. Anderson agrees that resistance training is good for building muscle, but stresses the importance of aerobic training as well.
