UPDATE: SR1 Still Closed After Morning Accident In Smyrna

Posted: Updated:

SMYRNA, Del. - Delaware State Police are investigating  an accident involving a salt-carrying dump truck in Smyrna. It happened on southbound Route 1, at Exit 114 around 9:45 AM.

According to DSP, 39-year-old Brandon Hines was driving the fully loaded truck southbound on Route 1 and drifted into the grassy median. Hines reportedly tried to correct the drifting, but the weight of the full truck caused it to overturn on the driver's side, spilling salt onto the roadway. The truck is said to have slid after it overturned, eventually coming to a stop on the grass shoulder.

Authorities say Hines was wearing his seat belt and was pinned inside the truck for around two hours before EMS was able to free him.  He was to Christiana Medical Center where he is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Hines was cited for careless driving.

SR1 southbound is still closed at Exit 114 as crews continue the clean-up of the salt and debris. Commuters are advised to find alternate routes until the roadway is re-opened.  You may also check on the status of the roadway by clicking on the Real-Time Travel Advisory.
