UPDATE: UMES Boulevard Reopened After Suspicious Package

Posted: Updated:

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Princess Anne Police say UMES Boulevard is now safe for travel, after they reported that they were investigating a suspicious package in the area. Police had closed UMES Boulevard from Somerset Avenue to College Backbone Road, and diverted all traffic.

According to reports, the roadway had been closed just after 11:15 AM, due to a suspicious package that was found in Arden's Run, a student housing complex, located between Route 13 and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Officials say that the suspicious package incident has since been resolved and the package was found by a janitor at the apartment complex.

Police say a maintenance worker found a suspicious item, that appeared to be an explosive device, while doing routine maintenance on an apartment. The Arden's Run Management Office then contacted Princess Anne Police, about the device.

Princess Anne Police, UMES Campus Police, Maryland State Police, and the Somerset County Sheriff's Office all responded, and evacuated residents. The State Fire Marshal's Office, EOD, and the Worcester County Sheriff's Office Bomb Unit also responded to the scene.

Officials say bomb experts examined the device, and determined that it was not explosive in nature. Officers with the Princess Anne Police Department reportedly recovered and secured the device. Residents of Arden's Run were then allowed to return to their apartments.

Police say at this time, no arrests have been made, and that their investigation is continuing.
