Troopers Investigate A Train Versus Vehicle Crash In Ellendale

Posted: Updated:

ELLENDALE, Del. - Delaware State Police are investigating an early afternoon crash that involved a train and a car in Ellendale.

The crash occurred on Monday around 1:30PM.  Police say 35-year-old Brandon Rudy of Vienna, VA was approaching the railroad tracks near Railroad Avenue, when he failed to stop at the crossing signal. His vehicle was struck on the drivers side by an oncoming southbound Norfolk Southern train with three engines and twenty-two cars attached.  The impact caused the car to spin, stopping on the east side of the tracks.  The train was able to come to a complete stop without derailing just south of Main Street.

Rudy was partially trapped in the vehicle and was eventually rescued by the Ellendale Volunteer Fire Company before being transported to Milford Memorial Hospital. He was later transferred to Christiana Medical Center where he is currently listed in critical but stable condition. Police say he was properly restrained at the time of the crash. No one aboard the train was injured.

This is an ongoing investigation.
