PROMISE: Making Prom Possible For High School Girls

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - Prom is a special time for many high schoolers, but the expenses that come along with it may be too much to bare.

Realizing the bills could total more then $600, Betsy Robinson decided to go on a mission providing dresses for a night that will make memories for a lifetime.

"I put myself in someone else's shoes and think if I was a single mom and I couldn't afford to send my daughter to the prom what would I do," Robinson said.

So she and her daughter Hannah came up with PROMISE, an event that provides prom gowns for free to underprivileged high school girls in Wicomico and Worcester County.

For the last year, the pair have collected more than 400 gowns from around town. Many were donated from places like Patsy's Bridal, and made their way to the Robinson's living room.

They'll be on display at PROMISE March 22 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Church. More than one hundred girls were approved at school using special criteria to determine their need.

"They come next Saturday with their voucher and their school ID," Robinson said. "And they can pick out any gown, and they can pick out shoes, jewelry, makeup, we've had all that donated.

And the best part?

"They leave, without paying anything. It's all free."

The girls will also have a chance to leave with a little something extra. Businesses donated gift cards for door prizes for meals, hair and makeup.

A junior at Parkside High School, Hannah says working on a project to help other girls make it to prom means a lot.

"Prom is such a big day for a girl, besides their wedding day," Hannah said. "I feel like if you miss that, it would really touch your heart and it would be upsetting that you couldn't share that big day."

She says she's excited to make such an impact.

"I think that what we're doing would really benefit the girls and make a memory for them," Hannah said. "It's not just the gowns, but we're also giving them a dinner or a facial. I think that makes a big difference because if you're not able to like get all of the full prom, then it might not be the best experience."

Betsy says she's gotten a number of calls for donations and offers for volunteers in the last few weeks, and could always use more help. The project could use a location to store the dresses year-round, dry cleaning, and additional hands on deck Saturday.
