The Price Of Potholes- How To Save Yourself Some Money

Posted: Updated:

DelMarVa: You might see pot holes as more of a nuisance than anything else, but that little dip in the road can mean money out of your pocket.

One accidental dip into a pot hole can cost you a whole lot more than a momentary annoyance if it damages your car.

John Jones of Delaware Tire Center in Salisbury says, in addition to an hour wait,  "it costs them $79.95 for the four wheel alignment, and if they tear their tires up its 28 dollars for a flat repair.  Sometimes they have to get new rims."

Jones says they are seeing 8-10 people for pothole damage daily, which is an increase from previous winters.  And its not surprising, as officials say the rising and dropping temperatures this winter cause more of them to pop up than usual.

Gee Williams of the Maryland State Highway Administration explains how the water that seeps into asphalt cracks creates these potholes. "Under just the right conditions, it will freeze, which expands the asphalt  like a bubble. As soon as the thaw comes, that's when it collapses" he explains.

But transportation officials say snow removal and salting has to be the main focus.  Filling potholes is just one more expenditure to the already exceeded winter budgets.  Williams says, Maryland has a 42 million dollar winter spending budget, and as of the last winter storm, they exceeded well over 100 million dollars.  Jim Westhoff of DelDot says, they are now using money from capital funding.

There are a few things you can do to help keep your car safe from potential damage.  The first is to make sure your tires are properly inflated.  Maintain safe distance behind other cars, so you can see potholes ahead of you.  Third, try to avoid standing water, which can be hiding a deep pothole.  Also, if you use winter tires, you should keep them on through the first few weeks of spring until most potholes are filled.

But if you do hit a severe pothole, make sure you check for damage immediately.

Roads with the most traffic have priority of being fixed.  DelDot asks that if you see a pothole, to dial  #77, so they can fill it.
