Discussion Over OC Taxi Fare Hike Wages On

Posted: Updated:

OCEAN CITY, Md. - Riding in a cab in Ocean City might get a little more expensive if the city's cab drivers get their way.

John Donahue from Nite Club Taxi and other members of the Ocean City taxi industry are petitioning the town to raise the fare rate from $2.20 to $3.71 per mile.

So, Why the $1.51 jump?

Donahue says "it has every thing to do with the economy...not greed."

For the John Donahue, it's all about cost of living for the drivers who split the profits 50/50 with the cab company, but pay for their own fuel.

"It brings it in line with what you pay at the pump, what you go and buy your beef your chicken, your oranges, your eggs at the store with," says Donahue.

Some visitors to the resort town agree.

"It's all seasonal business so in order for them to make a profit and survive down here.  I think that, they increase their rates," says Roby Bradford.

It would be the first hike in 4 years.  Back in 2010, fares went from $2 per mile to $2.20, but not everyone in the resort town thinks this increase is a good idea.

"See, I think that's kind of ridiculous," says Sean Leckner.

The boardwalk shop owner thinks the fare raise goes too far, saying "it's a pretty big jump.  Especially when you've got people down here spending how much for a hotel room, how much for food.  To be safe driving and not get caught drunk driving or something, to get a cab and have to pay that much more, it just seems like you're just going to start losing business and losing people who come to this town."

But according to local leaders, it's at least worth a discussion, as the fare hike has found it's way onto next Monday's council agenda.

The cab drivers are also offering up flat rate fares, particularly for locals who use the cabs more often, and wouldn't want to pay the increased rate.
