Salisbury Elks Offering Scholarships

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - The Elks Lodge is one of the leading fraternal orders in the U-S, claiming nearly a million members. The Local Salisbury Chapter is again offering scholarships this year as part of their community outreach.

"We've actually donated over $1,000,000 to the Salisbury community [since 2005]," says David Hoster, Chapter President.

Scholarships form a major part of those ongoing community efforts. For high school seniors in Wicomico County, the Elks offer seven $1,000 scholarships per year. Five are sponsored by the Elks, and two by the Elks Ladies' Auxiliary.

"Salisbury Elks have been around for over a hundred years now. We're a big contributor to the Salisbury area. We're very big on youth. We're very big on the veterans," says Hoster. "Those are the two things we stand for."

The Elks source the scholarship money from their slot machine revenue, and the rest comes from the Elks National Foundation. The national program is quite the scholarship force. "As a whole, we give away $26,000,000 a year in scholarships, second only to the U.S. Government," says Hoster.

Because of that nationwide support structure, local winners have opportunities that could extend beyond Delmarva. Once students win at the local level, they have the chance to win in larger pools.

"If you start at the local level, and you get to the district, states, and move on to national level, you can actually get your full ride for four years," Hoster says.

To apply, you must be a senior in Wicomico County. Applications are available in school guidance offices, and must be returned by the first week of December.

The scholarship is based on both need and merit, so the application starts with SAT scores and grades, then moves on to leadership, and the final part addresses financial need.
