Wicomico Co. To Extend Sidewalks Near Bennett HS

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - The commute for students to and from James M. Bennett High School could be getting a bit safer.

Groundbreaking began this afternoon outside the high school. Wicomico County council president Matt Holloway says the Safe Route project will connect the school to an existing sidewalk along Beaglin Park Drive and extend it out so that students don't walk in the road.

"Unfortunately, kids have to step in the street from time to time," said Holloway. "It's just unsafe environments. So this is just going to help facilitate safe travel."

This isn't the first Safe Routes project. In 2009, the county says it completed a similar project near Salisbury Middle. The sidewalks are scheduled to be finished by next school year.
