Body Of Missing Woman Found In Berlin Marsh Water

Posted: Updated:

BERLIN, Md. - The investigation continues, after human remains were found in marshy waters in Worcester county Sunday night.

According the Worcester County Sheriff's Department, a body was found floating in the water near this community in Berlin.  Police say it was a waterman who discovered the partially submerged human remains just before 6 o'clock Sunday night in marshland off of Bay Landing Drive.

"The body was in a state of decomposition that is extremely difficult to tell who it was, or the gender at this point in time," says Lt.. Ed Schreir with the Worcester County Sheriff's Department.

While police can't say who was discovered, they did find clothing on and near the body that is indicative of women's clothing.

Investigators aren't sure how long the remains were in the water, but recent rain and snow likely were a factor in bringing it to the surface.

Lt.. Schreir explains "we've experienced a large amount of rain...precipitation.  What that does, is help clear the standing water in those general areas in this tributaries.  Now, it's a lot clearer.  It's basically been washed."

Though the body was found less than a mile from the home on Carefree Lane, where 77 year-old Helen David disappeared last May, the Worcester County Sheriff's office says there's no confirmation on whether the remains are that of the missing woman.

Despite almost a year of searching, police say they won't stop until she's found.

"We never give up hope on someone that's been reported missing," says Lt.. Schreir.

Helen David's family has been notified that a body was found in the area.

WMDT spoke to a member of the family, who says while they're waiting for official confirmation on the identity of the body, they're hopeful this will close what's been a very dark chapter.

The sheriff's department had been planning another search mission for Helen David in the near future, but that's on hold until  the body is identified, which could take up to 3 weeks for the Medical Examiner to complete.
