Supporting STEM Majors At Salisbury University

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - There's been a tremendous push in recent years for STEM-related educational programs, and at nearby Salisbury University, the Richard A. Henson School of Technology is in the vanguard of that push. STEM is an acronym for "Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math," and they are undoubtedly important fields.

"STEM skills are in demand by all sorts of employers," says Dr. Karen Olmstead, the Dean of Salisbury University's Richard A. Henson School of Science and Technology. "The state of Maryland has a huge tech workforce need. Half of STEM jobs will be in computer science…and it's thousands and thousands of jobs." The Henson School is a STEM stronghold, offering numerous scholarships to help students achieve their goals, even if those goals might veer into areas of industry that are not STEM-related.

"The types of skills that STEM majors often develop in those kinds of majors serve them well regardless. They include things like inquisitiveness, teamwork, follow-through, initiative…I think curiosity is the biggest thing, the biggest driver there," says Dr. Olmstead.

The school offers over a dozen scholarships of various values in different fields.

For high school students, who may even be in the earliest stages of the college search, Karen says "I think it's never too early for students, even a sophomore or junior in high school to really think through their plan for the next four to six years, and the affordability of it."
