MD Legislators Push For Bills To End Foreclosure Crisis

Posted: Updated:

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Del. Heather Mizeur says if her opponents in the gubernatorial race truly want to end the foreclosure crisis, they should work with her new foreclosure relief bill.

Attorney General Doug Gansler has trumpeted his efforts to reduce the foreclosure rate. Last week Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown's campaign accused him of not actually achieving much. A web ad on Brown's website noted that 5,400 families lost their homes in foreclosures last year.

Mizeur, a Montgomery County Democrat, accused Brown on Tuesday of "hubris" for casting blame without proposing solutions.

Last week, Mizeur introduced a bill that would prohibit deficiency judgments, which banks use to recoup losses from borrowers who default. It would also prohibit a banking practice that Mizeur says makes it harder for borrowers to identify who owns their mortgages.
