DE "Arresting Powers" Sheriff Seeks Re-Election

Posted: Updated:

SUSSEX CO., Del. - The Sussex County Sheriff, perhaps known best for his fight to grant arresting powers for his department, is running for re-election.

Sheriff Jeff Christopher tells WMDT that during his time his office brought in at least $3.5 million each of the last four years.

But Christopher says he will continue to push to restore arresting powers, something he says is consistent with state constitution.

"I believe the state police are doing a great job, however, they are getting to be more and more overwhelmed and I believe the sheriff's office can take a role, not in the expansion, but at least when they're out there to take action if needed," said Christopher.

The Delaware Superior Court and Supreme Court both denied Christopher's lawsuit last year.
