Salisbury Univ. Football Team Makes Conference Move

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University football team will have a new conference home in 2015. The Sea Gulls are leaving the Empire 8 Athletic Conference in New York, and moving a little bit closer to home in the NJAC conference in New Jersey.

Frostburg State and Christopher Newport Universities will join them in the move, as well as Southern Virginia University and Wesley College.

"Competitively, I can tell you that the New Jersey Conference, with the addition of the other four teams, is probably going to be one of the top two or three teams in football," said Head Coach Sherman Wood.

They'll play against current conference members Rowan University, The College of New Jersey, Montclair State University, William Paterson University and Kean University. The five teams that will be playing in the league in 2015 have accounted for 10 NCAA tournament berths in the past three seasons.

The Sea Gulls leave the Empire 8 with two championship titles. The move will allow Salisbury to keep its annual season-ending rivalry game, the Regents Cup contest, against Frostburg State University, and Coach Wood says it will also allow his student athletes to remain competitive in the classroom. Joining a closer conference means less time on the road for away games and more time for coursework.

"The Empire 8 Athletic Conference is an organization that we have the utmost respect for and are honored to have had the relationship since 2011," said Salisbury Director of Athletics and Recreation Dr. Michael Vienna. "The institutions and administrators within the Empire 8 welcomed us with open arms and we thank them for all they've done for us over the past three years."

Monday's announcement only affects football, as Salisbury's other 20 varsity sports will remain in the Capital Athletic Conference.
