Snow No More: Winter Weather Impacting Local Schools, Farms

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - Another blast of winter strikes, and there's just 17 days before spring.  With yet another day of canceled classes and postponed plans, some impacted by two important areas here on Delmarva - farms and schools - are saying enough already.

When asked if he's tired of winter, elementary school student Robert Peterson answered with little hesitation.

"Yes because it's cold and I like school."

Monday's snow day was the sixth this school year for Wicomico County. And because the school calendar doesn't have snow days added in, the county announced last week that the last day for students would change from June 6 to the following Friday, June 13, to make up the days. With Monday and Tuesday now in the mix, the school system could ask for a waiver from the state.

But the time off hasn't been a complete waste for some students.

"Since MSA's coming up, it'll give me more time to study," Clara Peterson said.

And even though it was time David Luppens got to spend sledding with his sons, he is anxiously waiting for the cold to end.

"The warm weather over the weekend got me excited for spring time," Luppens said. "Hopefully it's not too far around the corner."

Farmers are also hoping the weather breaks soon. We're just in the beginning of March, and some crops could be falling behind.

"The peach industry is probably the biggest worry right now," said Charles Wright, Wicomico County Farm Bureau president and owner of Wright's Market.

Charles White is president of the Wicomico Farm Bureau, and adds that even though crops like wheat, barley and peas aren't growing as they should just yet, it isn't time to worry.

"After this week gets straightened away, hopefully that stuff will catch up, we'll be fine," he adds.

As for school students, there may be a little fear about how the school year will end. Wicomico County school officials say there are a lot of factors that go in to canceling a school day, like analyzing weather patterns, getting input from law enforcement officials, and even considering what neighboring school systems are doing.
