Panel Keeps Minimum Wage Statewide; Cuts Indexing

Posted: Updated:

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - A panel of Maryland lawmakers will be working late to make changes to a measure to increase the minimum wage.

The House Economic Matters Committee voted Monday to reject a two-tiered proposal that would have raised the minimum wage less in smaller counties in the state where the cost of living is not as high. That keeps a proposed phase-in from $7.25 an hour to $10.10 by 2017 statewide.

The panel voted to take out a proposal that would have indexed future increases to adjust for inflation. It also moved the effective dates of three scheduled incremental increases from July 1 to Jan. 1 in the next three years. The panel also made adjustments to how tipped employees would be paid.

The committee is scheduled to keep working Monday night.
