Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del. - The city of Dover Police Department says a patrol officer's vehicle was nearly struck by another vehicle yesterday.

According to reports, around 6:31 PM, the officer was able to stop the suspect after the incident, and began a suspected DUI investigation. The suspect reportedly failed to provide the officer with any identification and was belligerent. Police say the suspect then attempted to exit his vehicle striking the officer in the leg with his car door. A struggle ensued and the suspect reportedly violently resisted the officer.

Police say a second officer arrived and they were able to take the suspect into custody. As a result, police say the officer's pants were ripped and the officer sustained injuries to both hands. Police say the officer was treated at KGH-ER for contusions and was released.

Reports say the suspect, Melvin Williams, 35, of Dover was found to be wanted on numerous bench warrants, had a suspended driver's license and was Driving Under the Influence. He was reportedly committed to the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center on $30,600.00 secured cash bond.
