Wicomico County Middle Schooler Wins Eastern Shore Spelling Bee

Posted: Updated:

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - After 27 rounds, Gia Bautista took the crown at the 2014 Maryland Eastern Shore Spelling Bee.

The 7th grader from Wicomico Middle School beat out nearly 50 4th through 8th grade students from across Maryland's Eastern Shore for the title.  Gia's winning word: metamorphosis.

Gia says the key to the competition isn't in memorizing every word in the dictionary, she has a strategy.

"Well, I look at patterns from the words and tips from each language and origin of the words to help me study.  I think it's very hard to memorize words."

Gia is headed to the Scripps National Spelling Bee this May in Washington, DC.

If she makes it through the vocabulary round, which she says is the hardest part, Gia could advance to the televised semi-finals on ESPN.
