5th Suspect Arrested In Dover Gun & Drug Seizure

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del. – Delaware State Police say on Friday, Horace Johnson, 20 of Newark, turned himself into detectives at Troop 2 for a drug investigation that happened on Wednesday.

Johnson was reportedly formally charged with Possession with Intent to Deliver a Controlled Substance, Possession of a Deadly Weapon During the Commission of a Felony, Possession of a Controlled Substance in a Tier 4 Quantity, Possession of a Destructive Weapon, Possession of a Controlled Substance in a Tier 1 Quantity, Possession of a Deadly Weapon by a Person Prohibited, Resisting Arrest. Police say he was arraigned at JP2 and committed to HRYCI in lieu of $66,000.00 secured bond.

The investigation began on February 26th shortly before 3:00 PM, when two troopers patrolling Delaware Route 1 observed a speeding 2013 Dodge Avenger. The Troopers reportedly stopped the vehicle on Route 1 southbound, north of the Scarborough Road exit.

After determining that the driver, Marques Purnell, 30, of Newark, had a suspended driver's license, troopers say they searched the vehicle and found a bag containing 454 grams of marijuana and a digital scale. Purnell and his passenger, Jermaine Durrant, 28, of New York, NY, were both reportedly taken into custody and transported to Troop 2.

Police say hours later detectives from the Troop 2 Drug Unit executed a search warrant at Purnell's residence in the unit block of Greenridge Road in Newark. As they approached they observed a 1996 Nissan Maxima reportedly leaving the house. Troopers say they tried to perform a traffic stop on the vehicle but it fled at a high speed. The car reportedly pulled into a parking lot and the driver fled on foot. Troopers did not catch the driver, but were able to identify him as Horace Johnson, 20, a resident of the house on Greenridge Road.

After the occupants of the Greenridge Road home refused to answer the door, detectives reportedly made a forced entry and located Kevon Walters, 23, Amanda Haden, 20, and another female. A search of the residence allegedly resulted in the recovery of approximately 11 pounds of marijuana, 56 bags (1.4 grams) of heroin, a sawed-off shotgun, cash, and drug paraphernalia.

Purnell, Durrant, Walters, and Haden were charged with drug-related crimes. Purnell and Durrant were reportedly released on unsecured bail, and Walters and Haden were committed to the Department of Corrections on secured bail.
