On The Lookout: Heroin Concerns Continue For Investigators

Posted: Updated:

WICOMICO CO., Md. - Heroin continues to cause concerns for local investigators.

We're told emergency responders have been steadily answering calls for services for overdoses over the past two years. In 2012, there were 21 overdose deaths in Wicomico County, 17 related to opioids.

According to Sgt. David Owens of WBI, in the past few years, they have found more drug users are using heroin over prescription drugs and the recent resurgence of heroin laced with fentanyl is especially dangerous.

"The individuals who are using it aren't thinking that it will create a near death or death situation," said Owens. "[Drug users] think that they'll be fine and finding out later that what they have is kind of supercharged."

Since September, that lethal-combination of heroin and fentanyl has killed at least 37 people in Maryland.

Every Maryland County has an overdose prevention plan, which can be found here.
