Dr. Joseph Badros Scholarship

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - After her husband died, Diana Badros wanted to honor him. She chose to do so with a $2,000 yearly scholarship, to support students and give them the chance to succeed the way her husband had.

"He served as an internal medicine doctor here in Salisbury for 33 years. And he died in 2006, and then I started the scholarship a year after that. And most of the contributions for the scholarship have come from people who knew my husband, or were patients, or friends," says Diana.

Dr. Badros was an immigrant from Egypt, who worked hard for everything that he gained in life and was no stranger to financial hardship. This scholarship is need-based, so financial information is critical to the application process.

"They need to go online, and look up the Dr. Joseph Badros Scholarship, it's being administered through the Community Foundation [of the Eastern Shore], they can find the application online," Diana says.

High school seniors in Somerset, Wicomico, and Worcester counties can apply -- by providing a transcript, letters of recommendation, and an essay. Past winners have gone onto succeed in various fields, from civil engineering to medicine.

Diana says more than any particular career path, they're looking for good grades, test scores, and a desire to continue education, adding of her husband "It's a testament to his record, and to people who cared about him."

The deadline to apply is April 1st, and students can also find applications in their respective guidance offices.
