OC Police Report Crime Numbers Drop From 2012 To 2013

Posted: Updated:

OCEAN CITY, Md. - Overall crime was down last year in Ocean City.

The 2013 year end report was released to city officials last week from the Ocean City Police Department. The statistics show only a slight increase in calls for service, with numbers jumping form 77,978 in 2012 to 78,414 in 2013. The number of citations and warnings reportedly increased from 20,124 to 26,314 in the last year, and the number of arrests dropped from 4,355 to 3,021.

Chief Ross Buzzuro says a change in legislation that happened in the beginning of 2013 determined certain situations where police can issue a citation instead of an arrest, which may explain the numbers. Despite some high profile crimes that happened over the summer, Chief Buzzuro says the numbers show a 13 percent decline in crime from 2012.

"That makes 150 plus or less more serious crimes that we did not have in 2013 that we did have in 2012," says Chief Buzzuro. "It shows progress and is very promising and optimistic as we move forward."

The statistics also show the highest number of crimes happened over the summer, with more than 300 offenses in June. Chief Buzzuro says they are gearing up for this year's summer season.

"We're looking forward to the heightened population, our population will greatly increase but we're ready."
