Dead Whale Discovered In Chesapeake Bay At MD/VA Border

Posted: Updated:

WMDT 47 NEWS - Wildlife officials are investigating the death of a 30-foot long whale in the Chesapeake Bay.

A spokeswoman for the Virginia Aquarium Stranding Response Team, Joan Barnes, says the whale was found near an island in the bay at the Maryland-Virginia border, in water that was about three to four feet deep on Sunday. Barnes tells WMDT the whale was fairly decomposed so they could not identify what type it is, but they conducted an on-boat necropsy and took some tissue samples.

Officials from the Smithsonian Institution and Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries are also reportedly involved in the investigation.

Barnes says details are still limited at this time, but they hope to get some more information within the next few days.
