Ocean City Rallies To Help Family Of 7 Year-Old Cancer Victim

Posted: Updated:

OCEAN CITY, Md. - Folks came into Pickles Pub in Ocean City Thursday, helping to raise money for the family of a girl they'd never met, but as Carol Miler says, "that's the community, everybody pulling together."

The fundraiser is the work of Brandi Mellinger.  An eleven year breast cancer survivor, Brandi was diagnosed at the age 26.

Now, with the help of her team, The Pink Ribbon Pin Ups, she devotes her time to helping other young people battling cancer.

"It just opened up a whole new world for me.  Then I found other young people who were diagnosed early," says Mellinger.

The most recent, Berenice Alejandro-Morales.  The seven year-old girl was diagnosed with Intrinsic Pontine Glioma, a difficult to treat tumor found at the base of the brain.  She was given only weeks to live, and with her family facing the unthinkably painful reality of funeral expenses for a daughter who was still alive, friends reached out to the Pink Ribbon Pin Ups for help.

Tragically, Berenice died just last week.

Brandi says she never got to meet seven year old Berenice or her family, but she knows their story, and that's all that counts.

Mellinger says "I don't really think that it matters if you know the person or not there's people that need help.  She didn't ask for that; she didn't ask to get that kind of cancer.  I didn't ask for it; my mother didn't ask for it.  Why not help them?"
