Berlin Still In Lead For "America's Coolest Small Town" Contest

Posted: Updated:

BERLIN, Md - There are just five more days until the winner of Budget Travel's "America's Coolest Small Town" contest is announced, and Berlin is still in the lead!

On the streets where Julia Roberts made a run for it, and the hotel that Richard Gere stayed in, it's the location for the film Runaway Bride, and a proud competitor in Food Network's "Cupcake Wars."

Three decades ago, Berlin was a ghost town. Fast forward to 2014, it's a picturesque, Neo-Victorian attraction, full of quaint boutiques and neat places to eat.

"Berlin is in a nice little Renaissance period and a lot of people are coming to check it out," owner of Victorian Charm Steve Frene said.

From farmer's markets to art strolls and a fiddler's convention, it's fair to say Berlin stands a real chance to come out on top. Where else can you swing from a hammock and workout all at the same time?

"We have aerial yoga, which is a gem because it's not found in every town or every city. It's actually only found in just a few," owner of Zenna Wellness Studio Chrissy Ehrhart said.

But the best thing about Berlin?

"Definitely the people—the locals. They're the salt of the earth," owner of Burley Oak Brewery Bryan Brushmiller said.

"It's the people," Paul Gorman of Berlin, Md. said.

"I really think it has everything to do with our attitude towards life. In Berlin we believe life should be celebrated, not suffered. Many times we refer to ourselves as the family of Berlin, and we genuinely mean it," Mayor Gee Williams said.

The town that wins will get bragging rights and a spot in Budget Travel's magazine and web site.

There's also a friendly wager going on between the town of Berlin and the town of Cazenovia, NY. The winning town's mayor will receive a growler of craft beer.

You can vote once a day until February 25 at CoolBerlin.org.
