Death Row Survivors Urge Lawmakers To Repeal Death Penalty

DELAWARE - Supporters of repealing the death penalty in Delaware are urging lawmakers to make a move.

The group Witness to Innocence is calling on the House to vote. It's hosting a number of events starting with one Thursday evening.

A bill to repeal the death penalty narrowly passed in the Senate, but has remained tabled in the House Judiciary Committee since April 30.

Fifteen members of Witness to Innocence will share their stories at a number of events in Delaware.

Kirk Bloodsworth, the first American exonerated from death row, will be speaking at the University of Delaware Thursday evening. Shujaa Graham will also join him.

On February 21, The Delaware Repeal Project, Witness to Innocence, Delaware Citizens Opposed to the Death Penalty, Amnesty International, Murder Victims Families for Reconciliation, and The Delaware Center for Justice will host a reception at the Delaware Theatre Company to welcome exonerees to Delaware. The reception which starts at 6:00 p.m., will be followed by the play The Exonerated at 8:00 p.m.

On February 22, The Delaware Repeal Project and Witness to Innocence will host a press conference calling on the Delaware House to vote on Senate Bill 19 at Limestone Presbyterian Church at 10:00 a.m.
