VA Beach Wants To Avoid Repeat Of Rowdy '13 Event

Posted: Updated:

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - Virginia Beach officials and business owners say they want to avoid a repeat of last year's rowdy College Weekend event.

Media outlets report that city staffers, police and business owners plan to meet Thursday to discuss tourism-related issues.

Police made nearly 150 arrests stemming from the April 2013 College Weekend event. There were several shootings, stabbings and robberies. At least eight people were injured.

Police Chief Jim Cervera says the city wants to ensure that such violence doesn't happen again.

Brandon Ramsey is an operating partner in a nightclub. He says he hopes the city has a good plan for this year's event.

A Feb. 27 meeting is scheduled for the Virginia Beach Hotel and Motel Association.
