Dover Airman Charged In Connection With 2012 Death Of Toddler

DOVER, Del. - A Dover Air Force Base airman has been arrested in connection to the death of a toddler.

Delaware State Police say, 25-year-old Justin Corbett, of Dover, was entrusted to care for 21-month-old Evan Dudley, while the boy's mother, also an airman assigned to the base, was deployed.

According to the report, on November 3rd, 2012 at 3:52 PM; Corbett called 911, to get assistance after the toddler fell down a flight of eight carpeted stairs, and become unresponsive. Dudley was transported to Kent General, then transferred to Nemours/Alfred I DuPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, where he was admitted in critical condition for head trauma, and multiple contusions on his body.

Police say on November 7th, 2012, Dudley succumbed to his injuries, and was pronounced dead at the hospital. The Delaware Office of the Chief Medical Examiner reportedly conducted an autopsy, and determined that Dudley had suffered multiple injuries, including retinal and other eye injuries, multiple contusions on his head, along with brain swelling and bleeding. The cause of death was then ruled homicide by blunt force trauma.

After a comprehensive investigation by DSP and the Delaware Attorney General's Office, Corbett was arrested on February 18th, 2014. He was charged with murder by abuse or neglect first degree recklessly cause death of child. He is currently being held at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Facility on $100,000 cash bond.
