Waste Energy Facility Could Come To Wicomico Co. In 2017

Posted: Updated:

WICOMICO CO., Md. - A waste energy facility is one step closer to becoming a reality in Wicomico County.

The county's Public Works department, among other officials, are still reportedly reviewing options of how the facility would convert garbage into energy-producing gas. Currently, some ideas suggest that the facility might produce steam or electricity.

Lee Beauchamp, director of Public Works in Wicomico County, says the project will be public-private partnership, and they currently have an $80,000 contract with a consultant to look into the project. The facility could go near the Newland Park landfill, one of the places that inspired the idea.

"We have a concern here that we are going to run out space for our landfill," says Beauchamp. "We've also got the need to improve our recycling rates for the state mandates and I honestly I think this is an opportunity for us to develop some jobs in the county."

Beauchamp says they hope to start bidding for developers in May, which could take a year, then start construction, which could take about a year and a half. He hopes for the facility to begin operating by 2017.
