Study To Look Into Possibility Of Insurance Program For Poultry Growers

Posted: Updated:

DELAWARE - Senator Chris Coons is touting the recently passed farm bill, saying it could help protect poultry farmers in Delaware and across the nation during uncertain economic times.

The bill authorizes a one year study of the possibility of providing insurance for poultry growers. It would look into the feasibility of insurance programs to protect these farmers from catastrophic loss, such as disease outbreaks, as well as from bankruptcies.

"If there's an unusual incident of a record drought, you're able to get insurance against the failure of your crop. Poultry is something that there is no product available. So we're studying it and my hope in a year from now, we'll be rolling out an insurance product that makes sense," he said.

Coons says the study will look into why an insurance program like this is needed, how it would benefit the poultry industry and what the costs and benefits would be.
