Seaford Unveils Harriet Tubman Marker

Posted: Updated:

SEAFORD, Del. - Harriet Tubman, she's the courageous abolitionist born into slavery in Dorchester County and who later led hundreds of slaves to freedom via the Underground Railroad.

During Black History Month, one Delaware city commemorates one stop on her many journeys.

State officials and city leaders officially unveiled a historical marker on Monday at Gateway Park in Seaford. We're told it designates a location she passed through while helping a slave named Tilly escape through the underground railroad up to Wilmington.

"This is the only documented story of a Harriet Tubman aided escape in Delaware and to commemorate that with a historical marker is really, really great for Seaford and it's great for the state," said Kate Fair of the Delaware Archives.

The marker is just one way that the City of Seaford is honoring the famed abolitionist. The Seaford Museum officially opens the Harriet Tubman and Tilly escape exhibit on Saturday, its a seasonal exhibit that will stay open until May.

At that point leaders say a permanent one will open up.
