Biden Warns Of Two Email Scams In Delaware

Posted: Updated:

WILMINGTON, Del. - Officials in Delaware are warning residents of two email scams. Attorney General Beau Biden says that Delawareans should be on the lookout for two email scams that have recently been reportedly to the Consumer Protection Unit, within his office.

The first scam involves a credit union. Recipients will reportedly get an email telling them they need to verify their credit union account information, but the email is really from a scammer. Those emails are an attempt by the scammer to get personal information, like bank account numbers, from potential victims, according to authorities.

In the second scam, Delawareans will get an email supposedly from a "private investor based in West Columbia, South Carolina", saying that they are looking to transfer a large amount of money to the United States, from a group of government officials in South Africa. The recipient will reportedly get a cut of the money for their participation, and turning over their bank account information. Authorities say there is no large sum of money, and scammers use the bank account information to steal the victim's cash.

Biden said "No matter how good an offer sounds, never give out your personal financial information online."

Anyone who receives these emails should ignore them, and if you think you've already fallen victim to these or other similar scams, contact your bank immediately. Unsolicited phone calls, e-mails, or other messages that one believes are a scam, can be reported to the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Unit by calling the Consumer Protection Hotline at 1-800-220-5424 or emailing consumer.protection@state.de.us.
