Va. House, Senate Unveil Competing Budgets

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The Virginia House and Senate continue to disagree on whether to accept federal funding to expanding health insurance coverage to lower income Virginians.

The two chambers unveiled changes they'd like to see to former Gov. Bob McDonnell's proposed biennium budget at the Capitol on Sunday.

The Senate's version of the state's budget would provide publicly funded private health insurance coverage to Virginians who earn too much to qualify for the state's current Medicaid program but not enough to qualify for tax credits on health insurance under the new federal health care law.

The House's budget would not expand Medicaid eligibility, though lawmakers did include an additional $118 million for the state's hospitals, which have been some of the biggest proponents of expanding Medicaid eligibility.
