MD Gets Waiver On Federal Sanctions Over Testing

Posted: Updated:

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - The Maryland State Department of Education says the state has received a waiver from the federal government to avoid double-testing and sanctions when testing new state assessments this year.

State Superintendent Lillian Lowery made the announcement on Friday.

The state requested a waiver from certain provisions in the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act to test new assessments in almost all of the state's schools.

Under the waiver, the state will be able to avoid federal accountability sanctions for one year.

The waiver was granted under certain conditions. They include having all students in tested grades take the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers in reading or math, or the current Maryland School Assessment as required.
