Snow & Rain Mixture Help Clear Roadways, Causes Flooding in Some Areas

Posted: Updated:

DELAWARE - DelDOT says a limited state of emergency made a tremendous difference for crews, and roads are looking pretty clear and safe, for now. Northern Delaware got hit with some of the heaviest snowfall since February 2010. The city of Dover got about seven inches.

Snow mixed with rain made for a slushy day on Delmarva.

"It makes the snow heavier. The snow holds moisture so it's tough when you have to pick it up and throw it," Dover resident Ron Roseborough said.

For DelDOT crews, it made clean up a lot easier.

"Rain melted a lot of the snow. In addition we were able to work all night with plowing and salting. So that made a big difference," DelDOT Spokesperson Jim Westhoff said.

But all that snow, melting so fast, raises another concern. Some are dealing with flooding issues.

"We're just trying to push the water along to get it down to the drains. It's heavy snow -- the kids can't even go out and play in it. It's just heavy, cold, icy snow. I'm putting our kids hard at work -- we're a family business and that's what we do," owner of Kritter Kove Pet Shop in Dover Doug Hall said.

More than 300 trucks are working statewide, clearing off as much as they can to prepare for more weather. More rain and snow are in the forecast, and with temperatures dropping overnight, it can be treacherous on roadways.
