High Winds Cause Downed Wires, Utility Pole Fire and Outages

Posted: Updated:

DELMARVA - You may have woken up to the sound of high winds Wednesday night. We're told gusts reached upwards of 35mph across Delmarva. In Salisbury, a gust of 51mph was recorded Thursday morning.

This proved to be a bit of an issue for electric companies. Delmarva Power says more than 2,000 customers  in Sussex County and about 1,500 on other parts of the Eastern Shore experienced outages in the morning.

In addition to a number of downed wires,we're told an electrical pole caught fire in the Millsboro area, when a loose wire made contact with the utility pole.

"We're still in storm mode in terms of response so we have everybody ready to go. We have extra crews if need be that will work around the clock. Our goal at this point is, we're monitoring the weather forecast which did call for some bad weather to come in again tonight," Delmarva Power Spokesperson Matt Likovich said.

In the mean time, if you haven't already done so, it's recommended you put a storm kit together with all the essentials like canned goods, bottled water, important phone numbers and a battery operated radio.
