VA Senate Votes To Repeal Tax On Hybrid Vehicles

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginians who drive hybrid vehicles could soon be paying lower taxes.

The Virginia Senate voted 37-1 Thursday to repeal a $64 annual fee on hybrids.

The tax was part of a massive transportation funding bill passed last year. It was originally set at $100 but reduced by former Gov. Bob McDonnell to $64.

Critics of the tax have said it unfairly punishes drivers who are trying to use less gas.

Since the tax went into effect last summer, state records show that 75,500 drivers have paid the $64 fee.

The repeal bill has already passed the House of Delegates and Gov. Terry McAuliffe has indicated he will sign it into law.
