MD Officials, Residents Taking Extra Winter Storm Precautions

Posted: Updated:

MARYLAND - Across Maryland, officials and residents are taking special winter storm emergency precautions.

Governor Martin O'Malley says up to 250 soldiers and airmen with the Maryland Guard have been authorized for active duty to help stranded motorists and work with local law enforcement. Despite the extra help, he is still asking all residents to avoid driving.

WMDT caught up with some residents getting some last minute grocery shopping done before the storm.

"It's crazy, there's a lot of people in WalMart," says Phyllis Collins, a Salisbury, Maryland resident. "The ten pound and five pound bags of sugar are gone, almost all the eggs are gone, the breads gone, people are crazy."

Governor O'Malley is also reminding residents that electricity companies are already experiencing an extra burden from the cold, and while they are bringing in extra crews, he is asking all residents to conserve power.
