College Goal Maryland: Demystifying The FAFSA

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. – The Free Application for Federal Student Aid, also known as the FAFSA, is a tedious and potentially confusing piece of business. However, a completed one is like a skeleton key, giving students access to myriad scholarships.

"The FAFSA is what gets you in the system for financial aid from the federal government, from the state government, and from a lot of colleges, universities, and other scholarship sponsors," says Rota Knott, Executive Director for the Delmarva Education Foundation.

So DEF is hosting an event to help students clear up some of the document's opacity. The event is called College Goal Maryland, and it's part of a nationwide effort to help college-bound students properly fill out and file their FAFSA's. Each student and their family will have an opportunity to meet one-on-one with an advisor who will help them through the whole process.

"We encourage students of all ages. It's not just for graduating high school seniors, not just if you're going to be a college freshman. If you're an existing college student you need to complete the FAFSA every single year," says Rota.

An additional incentive for students to attend: DEF is giving away two scholarships that very day. Each scholarship is worth $500, and every student who attends is automatically entered into a lottery to win.

This is the first time DEF is hosting College Goal Maryland, and it's the only one on the Delmarva Peninsula, which means that students from Delaware and Virginia can also attend.

College Goal Maryland will be held at the Tri-County Council/One Stop building on Route 50 in Salisbury on Saturday, February 15th, 2014, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (Snow Date: Saturday, February, 22).

Students must register in advance, by visiting www.collegegoalsundaymd.org.
