Superintendents' Against MD Schools Starting After Labor Day

Posted: Updated:

MARYLAND - Superintendents' across the state of Maryland are taking a stand about starting school after labor day.

A 21-member task force is reportedly currently investigating the issue to any state legislation that would require a new start date for schools. A spokeswoman for Senator James Mathias, one of the members of the task force, says the group has received at least 16 opposition letters so far.

One letter is from the Somerset County School District.

"It's a local decision and we feel strongly that it should be up to the school system to determine what's best for it," says Dr. John Gaddis, Superintendent of Somerset County Public Schools. "We know what our needs are, we listen to our community and it's our decision to make."

A spokesman for the Maryland State Department of Education says the task force has still not made a vote, and when they do, it will still be up to legislators to decide whether or not to pass the law.
