48 Cases Of Whooping Cough Confirmed Among Amish In DE

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del. (AP) - Public health officials say 48 cases of whooping cough have been confirmed in the Amish community in western Kent County.

The Delaware Division of Public Health said Thursday that it is working with the community to offer vaccinations and treatment.

Symptoms of whooping cough, or pertussis, include runny nose or congestion, sneezing and mild cough or fever. Severe coughing can begin one to two weeks after the illness starts.

Officials say vaccination is the best protection against whooping cough. Residents can call the DPH Immunization program at 302-744-1060 for information about free and low-cost vaccines for children.
