Delmarva Poultry Scholarships

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - The Delmarva Poultry Industry is once again giving back to the community by offering scholarships. In fact, this year, DPI could be giving out up to four. Each of those scholarships will be worth at least $1,500, and maybe more, if they have a particularly good fundraising year.

Candidates must be residents of the Delmarva peninsula. A panel will evaluate candidates based on their transcript, community service, career goals, and activities. There's one other requirement. "They must be following a pathway, a career pathway, that would lead to employment in the chicken industry," says Connie Parvis of DPI.

Connie is quick to quell any fears that that stipulation could be considered too exclusive. "Applicants should not be turned off by that because very often I think people think that's a very narrow range. They think of the person who grows the chickens on the farm, the people who work in the processing plant, but actually, there's a huge realm of career opportunities in between – things like sales and marketing, computer technology, finance, and accounting."

The deadline for applicants is April 1st. Applications can be found online at http://www.dpichicken.org/sprogram/scholarships.cfm .

The main fundraising effort for the scholarships is a golf tournament. This year's tournament will be June 18th at Green Hill Yacht and Country Club in Quantico, MD, and costs $90 per player.
