Wicomico Co. Council Discusses Clean Chesapeake Coalition

Posted: Updated:

WICOMICO CO., Md. - In Wicomico County, other ways to clean and protect the Chesapeake Bay are up for discussion.

At Tuesday's council meeting, members had an open work session about joining the Clean Chesapeake Coalition.

The group reportedly formed about a year ago after some questioned the Watershed Implementation Plan, which sets goals for cleaning up the bay and its tributaries at a hefty price. Now, the group is looking for more affordable ways to do so.

"I haven't been presented with any other vehicle that gets us toward a clean bay," says Matt Halloway, Wicomico County Council president. "We're just saying that we need some guidance and need some help establishing our own best management practices, and I think the Clean Chesapeake Coalition is the vehicle that we can use to do that."

So far, seven other counties in Maryland have joined the coalition, which costs $25,000 a year. The money reportedly goes to challenging the regulations brought forth by the state and EPA, and also to pay for attorney fees.

The county council expects to vote about joining at their next meeting.
