Temporary Wind Turbine Testing In Berlin

Posted: Updated:

BERLIN, Md. - A first of its kind wind turbine is finally up in Berlin.

At 21 feet, this turbine is a prototype of the 65 foot final product.  The generator will produce DC power, opposed to AC, like others.

According to Berlin officials, this design is smaller and built at a lower cost, while generating the same amount of energy.  With a $100,000 price tag for the final product, the designer wanted to take the technology for a test run first.

"Doug Richards, the inventor of the wind turbine.  He wanted to collect data...wind speed, direction.  He also wanted to see how it would withstand the elements.  The cold weather, the wind, the snow," says Tim Lawrence, director of electric utilities for the town of Berlin.

The final wind turbine is expected to go up later this year, after a few more months of testing with the smaller prototype.
