Beebe Healthcare Announces Possible Patient Information Breach

Posted: Updated:

LEWES, Del. - A local hospital says they are taking steps new to protect patient information after a possible breach in security.

Beebe Healthcare says that on December 27th, they learned that one of their temporary contractors, had been arrested in Pennsylvania four years ago, for incidents related to identity theft. The contractor had reportedly worked at three of Beebe's physician offices in the Beebe Physician Network since August 2013. Once Beebe found out, they say they immediately fired her, and hired a national forensic expert firm.

That investigation reportedly showed that during her time at Beebe, she had access to patient medical records, which included patient names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, health insurance information and clinical information. Beebe says there has been no evidence found that any patient information was removed from their Physician Network or has been used inappropriately in any way.

The agency who Beebe contracted performs background checks on all applicants, but that reported reportedly didn't show and potential criminal activity for this person. This incident affects approximately 1,900 patients, seen collectively, at three of Beebe's Physician practices: Beebe Internal Medicine in Lewes, Beebe Family Practice in Millville and Beebe Pulmonary Associates.

Beebe Healthcare says on Friday, they started sending out letters to affected patients to inform them and is providing credit protection services for them. A Call Center has been set up, to answer any questions, starting Monday February 3rd, from 9:00 AM until 7:00 PM, and can be reached at 1-866-264-1054.

Beebe says to prevent this from happening in the future, they will be performing their own background checks of all staffing agency employees.
