Federal Funds Released For VA Home Energy Costs

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The federal government is making an additional $10.1 million available in Virginia to help low-income residents with home heating and energy costs.

The funding follows the passage of an appropriations bill in Congress this month. In November, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services gave the state $71.8 million while awaiting action on the final fiscal year 2014 appropriations.

The federal assistance program helps low-income families with heating costs in the winter, cooling costs in the summer and home insulation.

In all, the program is making an additional $454 million available in all states after releasing $2.9 billion in November.

In Virginia, the state Department of Social Services oversees the program.
