Emergency Responders See Busy Month Across Delmarva

Posted: Updated:

DELMARVA - It has been a busy month for emergency responders across to Delmarva due to the cold.

According to the American Red Cross Delmarva Region, they have responded to 40 disasters and have assisted 179 people in the month of January so far. Last year during the same time period, they responded to 29 disasters and assisted 92 individuals.

In Salisbury, Chief Richard Hoppes with the fire department says a majority of their calls have been due to burst water pipes. He warns of the fire hazards that come with people trying to prevent their pipes from freezing.

"We're supposed to wrap those in a qualified or certified heat tape to thaw them out, and not use a flame or open heaters to thaw the pipes out," says Chief Hoppes.

Chief Hoppes says as the temperatures warm up this weekend, they expect a big increase in calls as pipes start to thaw out, and in many cases, burst.
