Powering Scholarship Opportunities For Students In Need

SALISBURY, Md. - The very same group that provides electricity to many on Maryland's Eastern Shore is also providing scholarship opportunities to students.

Since 2003 -- the Choptank Trust has been granting scholarships to students in need -- and powering the whole effort with small contributions from customers who choose to help. For the customers who opt into the program, Choptank rounds up their bills to the next highest dollar.

"We take those funds and we set aside $14,000 to go to scholarships," says Bill Ferguson of Choptank Electric. "When you start adding customers up, the number of customers we have, those dollars just add up and add up."

Each year, that $14,000 is divided among seven scholarships, each worth $2,000.

The scholarships are available to graduating seniors in Somerset, Worcester, and Wicomico counties, as long as their households are customers or employees of Choptank. The scholarships are need-based, so financial information is critical. Applicants also have to write an essay about how winning the scholarship will affect their lives.
