UPDATE: One Dead, One In Stable Condition After Fatal Milford Crash

Posted: Updated:

MILFORD, Del. - A Frederica man was killed, after reportedly crashing into a broken down tractor trailer on Bay Road in Milford on Tuesday.

Delaware State Police say around 8:30 PM, 56-year-old Jeffery Akins, of Harrington, was driving a 2005 International Tractor, fully loaded with live chickens, on New Wharf Road, when he came a stop at Bay Road. According to the report, as he was driving through the intersection, the trailer malfunctioned, coming to a stop, blocking the north bound lanes.

Police say that Akins attempted to use the tractor to get the trailer out of the roadway, but before he could, a 2000 Honda CRX driven by 32-year-old Jason Johnson Jr., hit the trailer between the wheels.

Johnson, who was reportedly wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene. His 9-year-old step daughter, who was also properly restrained, was removed from the scene by EMS, and is listed at A.I. DuPont in serious but stable condition. Akins was wearing a seat belt and was not injured in the crash.

Bay Road, Northbound at New Wharf Road was closed for about three hours while the crash was cleared. DSP Reconstruction Unit say they are continuing the investigation into this incident.
