DOVER, Del. - Wildlife officials say residents can begin hunting snow geese as part of a game management plan.
The 2014 Snow Goose Conservation Order to allow harvesting of snow geese will start on Saturday and run through Feb. 7. It will reopen on Feb. 10 and run through April 12.
The Division of Fish and Wildlife says the season was created to reduce and stabilize the greater snow goose population.
Snow geese are causing extensive damage to their breeding grounds in the Canadian Arctic as well as the wetlands and agricultural areas where they overwinter in the Mid-Atlantic.
Use of unplugged shotguns and electronic calls are allowed; there are no daily bag and possession limits. All other federal and state hunting regulations apply.
Last year, nearly 10,000 snow geese were harvested.
